The consortium comprised of AREP, CCTN Design and Nanjing Institute of City & Transport Planning Co., Ltd successfully won the international proposal competition for the urban design of Haichao subway station under Hangzhou’s rail transit TOD integrated development program. Haichao Station, located next to the east entrance of Hangzhou Railway Station in Wangjiang New Town Demonstration Area, functions as an important urban gateway for Hangzhou. As a hub between high-speed rail and subway, it will help Wangjiang New Town to become a nationally influential model of TOD.

地铁海潮站位于杭州市上城区铁路杭州站(以下沿用本地说法,称为“城站”)地区,背靠西湖,面向钱塘江湾,是杭州从“西湖时代”迈向“钱塘江时代”的时代交汇点。
Haichao subway station is located in the Hangzhou Railway Station area (named “Cheng station” by the locals), in Hangzhou’s Shangcheng District, nestled by the West Lake and facing Qiantang River Bay, functioning as Hangzhou’s transition point from the “West Lake era” to the “Qiantang River era”.
以杭州城站枢纽建设为契机,将规划区打造成为“长三角精品商务客厅、星核联动活力枢纽、杭韵名城展示窗口,通过”缝合城市、重塑门户、动态更新“三大策略,落实“两轴、一带、一心、四片”的空间结构。
With the construction of Hangzhou’s Cheng Station Hub, the planned area will become the boutique business lounge of the Yangtze River Delta Region, a vibrant hub of core interactions, and a display of the charms of Hangzhou. We propose to establish a spatial structure of “two axes, one belt, one center and four areas” through the triple strategy of “seaming the city, reshaping the gateway and renewing the dynamic”.
建筑设计 Architectural Design
设计延续杭州城市发展轴线将TOD中央空间打开,创造出空间开放、气韵连贯、视线通达的城市中央绿谷空间;可行、可赏、可游、可居的新城活力核心通过二层平台向外辐射,向西链接城站直达西湖、向东串接望江片区通达钱江新城。在这里,站与城共生、历史与未来对话、西湖与钱塘交融。
The architectural design continues Hangzhou’s urban development axis to open up central spaces for TOD, creating urban central green valleys that are spatially open, artistically coherent and visually unobstructed. The walkable, enjoyable, travelable and livable vibrant core of the new town radiates outward through two-layer platforms, linking up with Cheng Station westward for direct access to the West Lake and connecting with Wangjiang area eastward for access to Qianjiang New Town. Here, the station coexists with the city, history meets the future, and the West Lake merges with Qiantang.

项目采用多首层式设计,立体聚落式空间布局,在有限的用地范围内围绕核心中央绿谷竖向有机布置酒店、办公、商业、展示等多元功能。多标高的城市开放层不仅为各主要功能提供了独立入口,也以绿色的姿态面像城市,以开放的姿态拥抱未来。
综合开发,综合多元复合功能枢纽
区域内集酒店、商业、服务、展览、办公、交互、居住等多元功能于一体,打造TOD综合立体之城。
There will be diverse functions within the area such as hotel, commerce, service, exhibition, office, interaction and residence, all aimed at building an integrated multidimensional city TOD.

云从西湖来,潮从钱江起
Clouds come from the West Lake, while tides arise from Qiantang River
身处西湖至钱塘江腹地,串联西湖和钱塘江文化,海潮TOD的建筑造型通过对海潮文化的抽象提炼,在文化轴线上依次布置了极具海潮意向的站房、站厅和TOD广场,表达了“海纳百川、勇立潮头”的建筑意向,强化了西湖时代到西湖+钱塘江时代的发展趋势。
Located in the heartland between West Lake and Qiantang River, and connecting them culturally, the architectural modeling of Haichao TOD takes its source in the abstract refinement of the sea tide culture, arranging the station building, station hall and TOD square in successive waves along the cultural axis. It thus expresses the architectural intention of “inclusiveness and race to the top”, and reinforces the trend of transition from West Lake era to Qiantang River era.
交通设计 Transport Design
坚持城站东西站房机动车集散“东进东出、西进西出”的组织原则,避免过境交通的无效穿越;通过构建相对独立的地下环路系统,组织枢纽接送客交通,实现站城机动车交通的相对分离。
By insisting on the organizing principle of “east in and east out, west in and west out” for gathering and distribution of motor vehicles at the east and west station buildings of Cheng Station, we can avoid useless crossing and traffic. By constructing relatively independent underground ring road systems, and organizing the pickup and dropoff traffic at the hub, we can achieve relative separation of vehicular traffic at Cheng Station.

Conditions for underground spatial design
地铁海潮站地下空间设计是地铁海潮站TOD城市设计的重要组成部分。
The underground spatial design of Haichao subway station is an important part of the TOD urban design of the station.
TOD核心区线路条件复杂,既有1号线与规划中的18号线为地下空间的设计带来巨大的挑战。受1号线盾构区间的影响,TOD核心区被分为南北两部分,为了在保证1号线不停运的前提之下,连接南北两侧,设计将地下空间的深层南北分开,浅层局部连接。最大程度上保证了城市空间的连续性和可达性。
The subway line conditions in the core area of the TOD are so complex that the existing subway line 1 and planned subway line 18 pose tremendous challenges to the design of the underground spaces. Affected by the shield interval of subway line 1, the core area of TOD was divided into south and north parts. To ensure that their connection does not interrupt subway line 1 operations, it requires south-north separation of deep layers of underground spaces and local connection of shallow layers. This guarantees the continuity and accessibility of urban spaces to the maximum extent.
基于1号线管廊,婺江路隧道、清江路高架基础的位置关系,设计对18号线海潮站提出了深埋处理。将站厅层布置于B2层,一方面避免了贴沙河的位置影响,同时便于连接地铁及国铁,并为B1层连续的商业及城市空间创造了机会。
Due to the relative positions of subway line 1 pipe rack, Wujiang Road tunnel and Qingjiang Road’s elevated foundation, the design scheme proposes that subway line 18 be deeply buried in Haichao station. The station hall is placed on B2 level, which not only avoids Tiesha River, but also facilitates connection to subway and national railway, and creates opportunities for continuous business and urban spaces on B1 level.
地下空间设计原则
Principles of underground space design
在Arep过往的设计实践中,对于地下空间的设计,我们始终坚持五个原则:顺畅的行人联系;引入自然光;模糊地下地上边界;快速换乘;地下引入自然。这些设计原则也很好的融入了海潮站TOD的地下空间设计中。
Based on AREP’s experience designing underground spaces, we always hold fast to five principles: smooth pedestrian connection; introduction of daylight; blurring aboveground-underground boundaries; rapid transfer; introduction of nature underground. These design principles are also well integrated into the underground space design of Haichao Station TOD.

Concepts of underground space design
基于海潮站TOD紧靠城战东站房,地上功能混合开放的特点以及多个交通站点的换乘诉求,我们提出了3个设计概念:一是激活:打开地面引入自然光,连续地上和地下的空间和功能,激活城市;
Given Haichao Station TOD’s location next to the east building of Cheng Station, the characteristics of mixed opening of aboveground functions, and transfer needs at multiple traffic stations, we brought forward 3 design concepts. First, activate: open the ground to bring in daylight and continue aboveground and underground spaces and functions to activate the city;
二是连接:在枢纽两侧、地上地下建立流畅的步行连接,同时为车站提供地下快速落客;
Second, connect: establish smooth pedestrian connections on both sides of the hub and above and underground, while providing rapid underground drop-off for train stations;
三是换乘:创造直接的地下换乘通廊,串联车站和两侧的地铁站。
Third, transfer: create direct underground interchange corridors to connect the station and subway stations on both sides.
45°地下换乘轴

在地下二层,一条45°的步行走廊连接了国铁出站厅,地铁18号线海潮站站厅,以及地铁7号线海潮站站厅,同时设置多个出入口方便到达自行车停车库,商业及公园,结合自然光和绿植的引入,形成一条充满活力的地下城市空间轴。这条城市轴继续向西北延伸,一直连接到城站另一侧的1号线5号线站厅,一方面实现直接快速换乘,另一方面打通地下城市空间脉络,实现城市空间连接。
On B2, a 45° pedestrian corridor connects the exit hall of national railway, Haichao station hall of subway line 18 and Haichao station hall of subway line 7, while many exits and entrances are setup to facilitate access to bicycle parking, commercial facilities and parks, which form a vibrant underground urban spatial axis in combination with the introduction of daylight and green plants. This urban axis extends northwest to the station hall of subway line 1 and subway line 5 on the other side of Cheng Station, both enabling direct rapid transfer and completing the underground urban space system, thereby realizing urban space connection.
对于换乘轴的效率,我们进行了科学的人流模拟,结果显示在高峰时段依然可以保持顺畅的通行。
For the efficiency of transfer axis, we conducted scientific pedestrian traffic simulation, showing that smooth traffic can still be maintained even during rush hours.
清晰的设计边界
Clear design boundaries
在保证不同种类型的地下空间的紧密联系的同时,保证各类空间直接清晰的边界,应对未来可能需要面对的开发主体和开发时序的问题,保证地下空间设计的高落地性。
While ensuring close connections among different types of underground spaces, we draw direct, clear boundaries of various spaces in anticipation of possible issues with developers and development phasing, thereby guaranteeing high feasability of underground space design.
地上地下结构一体化设计
Integrated design of above and underground structures
18号线站台区域采用13.5米柱跨,形成开敞的站台空间,并和地上结构协调一致;
The platform area of subway line 8 employs 13.5-meter column span to form open platform spaces that are coordinated with aboveground structures;
TOD地块B4层楼板采用厚板,承载18号线盾构段上方的柱子和核心筒,避免建筑结构对地铁的影响。
The slabs for B4 on TOD land lot are thick slabs that bear columns and core tubes above the shield segment of subway line 18, avoiding the effects of architectural structure on the subway.
海潮站TOD结合城市规划、建筑、交通多专业共同协作、相辅相成,在这个过程中,不同专业背景的设计师们通过多次线上线下的沟通讨论,努力在城市、建筑、交通、景观等多个维度之间寻找各方都能满意的最佳解,同时保证项目切实可行,具备较高的落地性。
Haichao Station TOD is conducted in collaboration with many specialties such as urban planning, architecture and transport. During the process, designers from different professional backgrounds endeavored to seek the best possible solution satisfactory to all stakeholders among multiple dimensions such as city, architecture, transport and landscape through many communications and discussions online and offline, while ensuring the project is workable and highly realizable.
